I watched a few videos of IBM’s Watson playing Jeopardy, and what I am sure about is that although it might have a world of data and some limited knowledge of language, it definitely doesn’t “understand” natural language and is not truly intelligent.
Here are a few instances which prove my point.In the following video, Watson says Toronto as an answer to a question under the topic “US Cities”. -

Here again, Watson comes up with weird answers such as ”Chemise”, “Skirt” and “Blouse” to questions under the section “Computer Keys”. See at time 8:40

There are many more such instances, which clearly demonstrate the point I am trying to make. Douglas Hofstadter has made similar remarks in the following debate. It also features one of the designers of Watson. Hofstadter’s remarks start at 19:49. If you have the time and curiosity, listen to the entire debate which starts at 8:03.
Abbe it’s still pretty amazing what Watson can do! Haven’t listened to Hofstadter’s opinion yet. Will do that later today.
No doubts about that. It’s just that I don’t like it when people say that finally we have AI.
